C Is for Courage

Living courageously may be the hardest thing you ever have to do. I'm not even talking about overcoming phobias like spiders or heights or tight spaces. It takes courage to be vulnerable, to live authentically, to speak from your heart, to follow your dreams, and to face your fears of the unknown. Adulting is just so hard sometimes.

BrenĂ© Brown's book Daring Greatly was my handbook for life a couple years ago. During the months after my father's death, I got divorced, had to move, and released any rights I had to my beloved Boston terrier. I stared down loneliness, anxiety, and grief.  Every day felt like an exercise in courage. Just getting out of bed and getting dressed made me feel worthy of a medal some days.

By pressing forward with courage, in spite of the fear that wracked my soul, I survived one moment at a time; one day at a time. I didn't feel all that brave then, but looking back, I'm quite proud of my persistence to get to a happier place.

That's where I find myself today. Happily married to the perfect man for me, and enjoying being a mother, stepmother, mother-in-law and grandmother to some of the most amazing humans; my cup runneth over.

On particularly tough days, we can set an INTENTION for the day, and do the things that challenge us with courage. When I feel anxious about something, I find taking three slow, deep breaths helps me feel calm and more balanced. (Courage seems to come easier when we're not hyperventilating.)

If you are struggling with fears at this time in your life, take heart and carry on. Courage will allow you to act bravely, in spite of your fears.

Several of my friends are doing the blogging challenge with me. We have quite a variety in our group. If you enjoy intelligent, witty, thought-provoking writing, trust me; you'll love the way these powerful women write.

  1. What a great post! I don't think at the time we ever think we are being courageous, I think it is most always after the fact. But even after the fact it is good to know that we be strong or courageous when we most need to be.

  2. Such a great post and I know I have said it before, but I LOVE this series. You reminded me of when you were going through all those changes and your writer friends were thinking HOW is she doing this? A gorgeous post with a wonderful mood and great pictures. You've gone a long way woman and have so much courage.
