So Long, Summer...

Summer starts tiptoeing away so slowly, so quietly, in such subtle ways, that one day we wake up and realize that she is all but gone, and autumn has started to take her place. Many do not like this time of year, this saying goodbye to summer.

I love summer
as much as the next person,
but I probably love fall
a little more than most.

Summer is weekends full of fun things to do: the Renaissance Faire, visiting with friends, traveling, trips into the city, cookouts, visiting the lake. But summer is also full of heat and humidity, and mosquitoes and fruit flies.

Yesterday, Chuck and I finally moved our sleeping quarters back into our bedroom. We started camping on the floor of our family room several weeks ago when the temperatures became too much for our air conditioner to conquer. It was wonderful to open the windows, and turn on the fan, and sleep in the cool night air for a change.

There was actually a cool breeze when we went out to dinner last night. I'd almost forgotten what chilly felt like during the miserably muggy heat wave we've had in the midwest.

I've been burning apple and pumpkin spice candles since July, but autumn is going to be legitimately here before we know it. My table is set with autumn colors. I even bought new orange dinner plates.

We're expecting company. Welcome to Chicago, Kimberly!

You may think I'm premature in all of this, but that's just how I am. I like to think of it as double-dipping the seasons. While it's still summer, I enjoy sneak previews of the wonderful autumn to come. And when fall is actually here, I do the same thing with wintery things. (Last year we decorated our Christmas tree on Halloween. <Collectively groan, if you must.>)

My heart feels so happy and light. Not being drenched in sweat will do that to a gal. I'm looking forward to so many firsts of the season:

Candy corn and caramel apples.
Pulling a hoody over my head.
Seeing a red maple leaf.
Morning temps in the 50s.
Going for a ride to look at the colors.
A crackling fire in the fireplace.

For me, this is not a time of mourning the passing of summer as much as celebrating the coming of fall. So long, Summer.

Welcome back, Autumn. What took you so long?

  2. I love it that you start early to celebrate Fall. I'm not a big fan of Halloween, but I love the color, orange, as well as pumpkins, so I'm going to follow your lead and get started and let Halloween be a blip on the radar screen. And get a couple of orange plates!

    1. I don't know if you have Dollar Tree where you are, but my plates were only a dollar each! Thanks for reading!

  3. I adore Autumn and just can't get enough of it. We were well on our way there before Indian Summer hit us. Thank you for the sweet anticipation (and lovely pictures) of what I have to look forward to in the weeks to come.

    1. I imagine it's much cooler up at the ranch. But yeah, that Indian Summer messes with things!

    1. I realize not everyone shares my enthusiasm for autumn, but probably everyone anticipates one season more than the others!

  5. Yay for open windows! I have mine open too, and love to snuggle under a blanket, particularly when the cat will snuggle too. Like Carolyn, I am not a fan of hallowe'en, and I honestly don't get the pumpkin-spice-everything craze. But I do love the colours, the smells, the anticipation. Fall is always my new beginning, and it excites me. I'm glad to have a kindred spirit in that.

  6. I'm dying for real autumn. As a bitter SoCalian who feels the seasonal shift in her guts but who is facing the forecast of triple digit heat these next few days, I'm SO ready for the real autumn... P.S. Mimi's restaurant has AMAZING pumpkin spice muffins right now.

    1. Oh, I love Mimi's. Hm. I haven't seen one in Illinois. Triple digits? I hope those are behind you now!
